Tsunami

Tsunami, Japanese word meaning “harbor wave,” used as the scientific term for a class of abnormal sea wave that can cause catastrophic damage when it hits a coastline.

Tsunamis can be generated by an undersea earthquake, an undersea landslide, the eruption of an undersea volcano, or by the force of an asteroid crashing into the ocean. The most frequent cause of tsunamis is an undersea earthquake. When the ocean floor is uplifted or offset during an earthquake, a set of waves is created similar to the concentric waves generated by an object dropped into the water.

Gorillas

Gorillas are the largest of all the primates. A male gorilla can be 180 centimeters tall and can weigh 200 kilograms. Gorillas are very strong but they do not often fight. In fact they are peaceful animals.

Gorillas live in small family groups of about 15. In a group there is one strong, older male, some young males, and a few females with their babies. They move slowly around a large area of jungle eating leaves and bushes.

In some ways gorillas are very like humans. When they are happy, they laugh and wave their arms. When they are angry, they beat their chests. When they are sad, they cry. But they cry quietly, without any tears.

Unfortunately, people hunt and kill gorillas. They also cut down and burn their trees. There are now only about 10,000 gorillas left in the world.

Pengertian dan Tujuan Report Text

Report text merupakan jenis teks dalam Bahasa Inggris yang menjelaskan fakta ilmiah suatu objek dari berbagai sisi baik fisik maupun nonfisik. Dikatakan fakta ilmiah karena Report Text melaporkan hasil penelitian ilmiah terhadap sebuah fenomena apa adanya.

 

Pada level SMP/ MTs, Report Text sering terkacaukan dengan Descriptive Text. Report Text dan Descriptive Text sama-sama bertujuan untuk menggambarkan sebuah fenomena. Namun, report text cenderung mengarah ke fakta ilmiah dan fenomena yang digambarkan lebih umum dibandingkan dengan Descriptive Text.

 

Misalnya, jika penulis ingin mendeskripsikan kucing yang dipelihara oleh penulis, maka penulis menuliskan Descriptive Text. Namun, jika penulis ingin melaporkan hasil penelitian mengenai kucing secara umum, maka penulis menuliskan Report Text. Teknis judul untuk kasus ini misalkan “My Sweety Cat” untuk Descriptive Text, dan “Cats” untuk Report Text. Isi teks juka akan berbeda, karena Report Text akan mendeskripsikan kucing secara umum, misalnya bagian-bagian tubuhnya, habitatnya, makanannya, cara reproduksinya, dan lain-lain.

Descriptive Text

Definition and Aim/ Goal/ Purpose

Descriptive text is a text which says what a person or a thing is like. Its purpose is to describe and reveal a particular person, place, or thing. Jadi teks ini mendeskripsikan (menggambarkan) dengan jelas suatu benda baik itu manusia, hewan, tumbuhan maupun benda mati.

Generic Structure

Teks ini terdiri dari dua bagian, yaitu Identification, dan Description.

1. Identification

        This section in the first paragraph - the goal  is to identify something to be described or depicted.            Identification introduces the object or something that will be described in the text. 

        Bagian ini ditemukan pada paragraph 1 yag isinya adalah memperkenalkan apa yang akan 

        dideskripsikan dalam teks.

2. Description

        This section is found in the second paragraph up to the end of the text. It gives detail information 

        about the thing described in the text.
        Bagian ini ditemukan pada paragraph dua sampai akhir teks. Berisi tentang gambaran objek yang 

        ditulis secara rinci.

Procedure Text

Perhatikan Text berikut:

How to Make Fluffy Pancake

Ingredients:

• 5 eggs
• 40 gram sugar
• 60 gram purpose flour
• 2 gram baking powder
• Salt
• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
• Honey

Instructions:

First, separate the egg yolk and the white. Then beat the egg white until stiff.

In a separated bowl, mix the egg yolks with sugar until the sugar melts.

Descriptive Text Games

Desriptive text ada jenis teks yang bertujuan menggambarkan sesuatu, seseorang, atau suatu tempat. Dalam pelajaran bahasa Inggris, teks ini diajarkan di level SMP/ MTs mulai kelas 7. Seperti jenis bacaan yang lain, kemampuan yang dibutuhkan untuk memahami bacaan teks deskriptif adalah:
1. Memahami gambaran umum (General Idea),
2. Memahami ide utama (Main Idea),
3. Memahami informai rinci pendukung informasi utama (Supporting Detail),
4. Memahami informasi tersirat (inference),
5. Memahami rujukan kata (reference),
6. Memahami makna kata/ frase (Word/ Phrase Meaning), serta
7. Memahami tujuan komunikatif (Communicative Purpose)
